Maus/Night Compare Blog

Maus and Night compliment each other because they both give good stories of what happened in the holocaust. Night, however provided me with real examples of someones story, making it the better read of the two. Some reasons for this are, Night was more realistic and had more impact on me. Maus, to me seemed to make a joke of what happened in the Holocaust. I don't see how anyone can depict the Jewish People as mice and make it into a comic book. The idea behind Maus was meant to give the reader a good example of the holocaust, but Night did a better Job overall. If someone asked me what book they I suggest it would be Night, because of its effectiveness to show the reader of the Holocaust.

Restrepo Blogging Assignment

At first in Restrepo the soldiers were having a good time on the train to their destination. This scene brought Fallen Angels to life because at first in the book they were scared but still had no clue what they were getting in to.

Seeing how the men in the movie reacted when they killed someone was similar to when the soldiers in Fallen Angels killed someone because they felt they had avenged the deaths of their friends and fellow soldiers.

When the soldiers in Restrepo were injured it reminded me of the way the soldiers in Fallen Angels reacted. For example, when Perry was injured he reacted the same as when one of the soldiers in Restrepo did.

In Restrepo the soldiers cried and mourned each others deaths as they did in Fallen Angels. It gave me a visual for what they go through.

In Fallen Angels they talk about how the war affected the civilians, In Restrepo I saw how much the innocent civilians are affected.

Seeing the relationships the soldiers had with each other showed me how close and how hard death is to the soldiers in both Fallen Angels and Restrepo.

In Fallen Angels, the soldiers tried to get the villigers to be on their side, this also occured in Restrepo. This showed me that in every war this is neccesary.

In Restrepo the soldiers relied and depended on each other as they did in Fallen Angels. This showed me that in order to survive war the soldiers must bond together.

The way the soldiers adapted to the landscape in Restrepo was alot like how they do in Fallen Angels. They had to adapt to the hills, the weather and the tempurature.

In both Fallen Angels and Restrepo the soldiers write to their families, and lie to them about their situations.

Reading Fallen Angels and watching Restrepo has showed me so much about war that I didn't know such as, the changes the soldiers go through and how good and bad of an experience war truely is. An example of a change the soldiers go through is when in Restrepo the soldiers have to deal with the deaths of their friends and fellow soldiers. That is a great example and probably the most life changing thing the soldiers deal with. Not only the soldiers in these two stories but soldiers in general have to experience alot of good and bad things. Examples of the good experiences are, the soldiers get to meet new people and learn how to become a man. Examples of bad are, the loss of fellow soldiers, having to kill somebody, and being so far away from home. Not only did war change the soldiers, the stories of war changed me.

Fallen Angels

First Draft of Fallen Angels Paper
2/28/11
Cas Woosley

The theme of this story is that War changes soldiers in many different ways. The author made this theme because he wanted the reader to have a realistic idea of war. The soldiers in this story went through so much pain together which made them as close as brothers.
When the squad first arrives in Vietnam, they are oblivious to what war is truly like. But when Jenkins dies everything changes. I believe the author had Jenkins die this early to put the true effect of war on the soldiers. Perry especially was affected by Jenkins death because it was the first person he had seen die, also it happened right in front of him. After this, the realization of war hit the soldiers very hard. “Let us fear death, but not let it live within us” (Pg. 44). This quote expresses the theme by giving an example of the changes a soldier goes through.
The Vietnam War continued to change the squad throughout the book. At first they complained about everything at the base, such as the food, the weather, the bugs, and each other. But as the story progressed and seeing how real war was they found peace at the base. The author did this to further express the changes they were experiencing. The soldiers always talked about how the war was going to be over soon, but as more time and more firefights passed they realized it might never end. I believe the author had the characters in the story do this to show how war seems never ending.
